Biomass as a renewable fuel for heating
Plant biomass is the matter that makes up plants. The energy it contains is solar energy stored during growth by means of photosynthesis. For this reason biomass, if used in a continuous production-use cycle, can be a renewable source of energy that respects the environment.
Burning gas or oil for heating emits and accumulates carbon from deep underground into the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect. By contrast, the biomass fuel does not give any net contribution to the greenhouse effect, because the carbon emitted by burning wood comes from the atmosphere itself and not from underground.
The technologies that use plant fuel for home heating have made great progress in recent years, reaching high levels of efficiency, reliability and comfort.
There are basically three types, based on the three main categories of plant fuel:
- firewood in logs,
- wood chips (chips),
- pellets of milled or pressed wood (pellets).
Heating with biomass fuel is good for the environment.
